The Myers Brigg Type Indicator is a tool that assesses personality type by addressing how individuals interact with the outer environment, take in information, process information and manipulate what they take in. Terms such as introvert, extrovert and intuitive, for example, are words that we take for granted today, but have only been developed in the last ninety years.

There  are sixteen types based on four preferences people use. They interact with the environment in an introverted or extroverted manner, take in information via intuition or using the senses, process it by thinking about concrete practicalities or considering all factors including other input and manipulate it by judging—meaning concrete organization or perceiving— meaning getting the job done done well an effectively in a more casual way.

Given there are sixteen basic personality types, many of which are completely opposite, it is inevitable that there will be conflict and frustration within teams resulting in poor productivity at best or the complete stall of a project at worst. There are several reasons knowing one’s own type and the types of the team would make a project work better. First, on an individual basis knowing oneself helps one know what works for them and what does not. Changing what does not work goes a long way in reducing personal stress making a person more productive. Second, Knowing how a type functions reduces stress because it helps others realize that a co worker may not be deliberately  difficult but rather simply their way of being. Finally, no one operates within a finite box, for every type a person is, they also have the opposite within themselves. Knowing that will help them use that opposite to be more productive within a team.
